NOTICE TO PUBLIC:

August, 2020

Last month, we introduced our statement on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.  LifeSpan stands against any form of racism and shares deep grief over senseless murders of Black lives. As a key organization in southern Indiana supporting independence and quality of life for all persons, it is our desire to see all Black Americans treated with fairness and equity. We said we were willing to have the tough conversations with open and honest dialogue at every level of our organization. We stated that we intend to be part of the solution and to do that, we would engage our Board, leadership team and entire staff to ensure our environment is free of any systemic racism that may hinder our progress towards our Mission.

Now is the time for action. Here are the steps we are taking:

  • We have enlisted the aid of Alfonso Cornish, a respected Black leader and expert on Diversity and Inclusion, as our consultant and guide as we navigate this process.
  • We have conducted our first all-staff meeting with Mr. Cornish and our board leadership to introduce our Inclusion plans.
  • We have established a new LifeSpan Diversity and Inclusion Committee and solicited staff interest in joining the committee.
  • We set general ground rules for the committee:  The Chair will be a representative from our Human Resources consulting group, HRA.  A board member will also sit on the committee as our Executive Sponsor. We will have between 8 and 12 staff members on the committee.
  • The committee is forming now with much interest from our staff.
  • Next steps will entail convening the committee and setting ground work and goals.

We are excited to begin this process!  I’d like to thank Al Cornish, Amy Olds of HRA, Dr. Deepak Azad and Annette Roberts, LifeSpan Board President, and the many staff members who have expressed interest in this process.  We hope to name all of the committee members and announce their first steps in the near future.
