DECEMBER 2011

Our Aging and Disability Resource Center Hits a Milestone

In the month of December, 2011, LifeSpan Resource’s ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) had its 10,000th contact reach out for information. Mr. Conley Marcum, a resident of New Albany, called to find out directions to the Medicare Open Enrollment Event being held in Jeffersonville. He was provided with the directions and while attending the event was able to speak with a SHIP counselor (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). SHIP counselors can address questions about Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicare Managed Plans, Medicaid and prescription coverage. Mr. Marcum was given information to assist him with making important health insurance decisions.

LifeSpan Resources’ ADRC has both SHIP counselors and Options Counselors. Options counselors can assess existing or anticipated long-term care needs. Based on those needs, we then provide comprehensive information on the full range of available public and private programs, options, service providers, and resources within the community. For more information give us a call at 888-948-8330, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Monday, December 14, 2009 - At a Statehouse ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman awarded the City of Scottsburg a $500,000 Community Focus Fund grant for construction of a senior/youth center. The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) administers the grants, which are funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Thirty-three communities and counties were recognized at the ceremony, with grant awards totaling more than $15 million.

“Grant opportunities, like this one, allow rural communities to undertake projects they might not otherwise be able to fund,” said Lt. Governor Skillman. “The Community Focus Fund grants provide communities with the resources they need to achieve their long-term development goals and eliminate the barriers that stand in the way of their economic success.” The City of Scottsburg will use the grant funding to renovate the first floor of the Bacala Building for use as both a senior and youth center.  LifeSpan Resources, Inc. is one of the sub-recipients, and will be responsible for the programs and activities for senior citizens.  The Scott County Family YMCA is the other sub-recipient, who will be responsible for the youth programs and activities.  The Bacala Building is owned by the City of Scottsburg and was built in the 1930's.

The Community Focus Fund grants are awarded twice annually through a competitive application process. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to: community and senior centers, special needs facilities, libraries, water system improvements, storm drainage projects, and sewer system improvements.
