MEALS
All of our meals are prepared by Masterson’s Catering and carefully planned by their Nutritionist to meet 1/3 of the recommended daily allowances. A typical meal will consist of: meat, vegetable, dessert and a milk choice (2%, Skim or Chocolate). The current menu can be viewed by clicking on the link above.
SPECIAL DIETS (ALTERNATE DESSERT ONLY)
Through our caterer we are able to make substitutions to accommodate diabetics. Normally this constitutes substituting fruit or sugar free desserts for the scheduled dessert.
Meals provided by the Senior Nutrition Program comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and support a low-fat, low-salt, low-sugar diet. Seasonings are provided at the Nutrition Sites for those who request them. It is assumed that Meals on Wheels clients will have their own seasonings on hand.
DONATIONS
We do not charge a set amount for each meal, however we do recommend and appreciate a donation toward the meal. Donations are necessary to maintain the program. The suggested donation is $2.00. There are levels of recommended giving posted at each of the Nutrition Sites. Envelopes are provided with the homebound meals and participants can choose to donate daily, weekly or monthly. Each Nutrition Site has a donation box and envelopes for your giving convenience.
SCHEDULING YOUR HOMEBOUND MEAL
Meals On Wheels are available on a long-term basis or for a short-term basis. Some may need the meals after being in the hospital while they recuperate, others may need them on a longer-term basis. To receive a homebound hot mid-day meal through Meals On Wheels you must meet the following criteria:
Age 60 or over
Have a physical or mental impairment that prohibits meal preparation
No one available to prepare a mid-day meal
Meals-To-Go is a new, fee-for-service program that began on October 1, 2006. This program is available to any one of any age who might need the benefit of a home-delivered meal. The cost of the meal is $6.00 per meal/per day. Meals-To-go is not affiliated with the Meals on Wheels Program.
For Information on the Meals-To-Go Program and to request a home-delivered meal contact LifeSpan Resources and speak with the Information and Assistance Coordinator to complete an Intake. Information needed, besides the basics, for the Intake includes:
Social Security Number
Date of Birth
Monthly Income Amount
Medicaid Number (if applicable)
Emergency contact name, phone number and relationship
Once the Intake is completed and approved the Information and Assistance Coordinator will give it to the Nutrition Department. They will then determine the closest Nutrition Site and an available start date. Some Nutrition Sites have a large homebound route so there may be a waiting list. Others will be able to add an individual to the homebound route within 1-3 business days.
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
When our agency will be closed for a holiday box lunches will be provided for all Meals On Wheels clients. Box lunches will be delivered on the last regular delivery day before the holiday.
FROZEN MEALS
If it is determined that an individual is located outside of the delivery area for a Nutrition Site we can make arrangements for frozen meals. These meals must be ordered through our Nutrition Department and can be delivered to the Nutrition Site most convenient for pick up. Frozen meals are usually provided 5, 10 or 20 at a time, depending on need and storage space.
CONGREGATE NUTRITION SITES
To join us for a hot mid-day meal at one of our 12 Nutrition Sites we require a call in advance (at least 1 business day) to reserve a meal. Each Nutrition Site must submit their next days order to the Nutrition Department by Noon. Please make a reservation with the Nutrition Site before this time so the meal can be included.
Many Nutrition Sites offer other activities which all participants are welcome to participate in. These activities include games, entertainment, health screenings and social activities.
SNOW POLICY
If the Nutrition Sites will be closed due to inclement weather this will be posted
on WHAS Radio,
WAVE TV 3 and WLKY TV 32. If a posting that says “LifeSpan Resources/Meals On Wheels Closed” then the homebound meals will not be delivered and the Nutrition Sites will be closed that day.
